On May 16, 2026, 25 Rotary members from the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Metro and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Rio Grande, friends of Rotary, and Willdan volunteers gathered at Bike In Coffee in Albuquerque for what turned into an epic day of service. In less than two hours, the team collected 35 full bags of garbage from the arroyo and bike path area, restoring a well-loved outdoor space used by cyclists, walkers, and families.
This project was part of our district's ongoing commitment to hands-on, high-impact service that strengthens both our environment and our connections with one another. Volunteers came ready with gloves, grabbers, and good humor, quickly forming small teams to cover the winding arroyo and surrounding trails. The mix of sunshine, teamwork, and shared purpose made the work feel light and energizing.
Why this project mattered
- Environmental stewardship — Removing trash from the arroyo prevents debris from entering the river system and improves habitat for local wildlife.
- Community visibility — The cleanup took place along a popular bike route, giving riders and walkers a firsthand look at Rotary in action.
- Connection and fellowship — After the cleanup, many volunteers gathered at Bike In Coffee to enjoy food and conversation. Everyone covered their own meal, but the camaraderie was shared.
A model for future service
This project showcased what Rotary does best: identify a need, gather willing hands, and make a visible difference in a short amount of time. It also highlighted the power of inviting new people into service. Several participants were prospective members.
What's next
Our district will continue offering approachable, hands-on service opportunities throughout the summer. Community members can meet us again at a booth hosted by the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Rio Grande at Lavender Fest on July 25 at Balloon Fiesta Park, where clubs will be sharing upcoming projects and ways to get involved.
