Richard Haas
District 5520 Governor

Richard joined the Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Club in 2010 after an invitation from a close friend. He immediately became involved in the Club’s service projects. He served on the board as Membership Chair, Service Project Director, Club Administrator, Treasurer, and Club President from 2017-2018. Richard has also served the District as an Assistant Governor from 2018 – 2020 and the District Conference Chair from 2020 – 2021. He is a Paul Harris Society member and a Polio Plus member.
 
Raised in the Texas Hill Country, Richard graduated from Boerne High School and studied architecture at Texas A+M University graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1980. He received his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Colorado in 1982. Richard has practiced architecture in Denver, Austin, San Antonio, Santa Fe, and for the last 28 years in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In addition to his practice, he taught architecture to interior design students at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) for 7 years. He currently is the president of Desert Peak Architects in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He has received numerous awards for his work and is known for architecture that connects people to the landscape in a sustainable manner. In 2007 Richard received the New Mexico Architect’s Medal for his work in the region.
 
Richard has served the profession as President of the American Institute of Architects New Mexico Chapter in 2001, 2006, and 2019. He has served on several national AIA committees and chaired the 2018 AIA National Resolutions Committee.
 
He has served his community in various capacities over the years including the Chamber of Commerce as Chair of the Board and as Chair of the Southwest Spaceport Task Force Chair which led to the establishment of Spaceport America in New Mexico.
 
Richard and his wife Susan have been married for 43 years. Their family includes a son and daughter, each with their own family living nearby, and 7 grandchildren. After retiring from the US Postal Service, Susan went back to NMSU and earned her Nursing degree and is an RN in Las Cruces. They both enjoy traveling and motorcycling throughout the Southwest and playing with their grandchildren and Aussie pups.  Richard also enjoys backpacking in the Rocky Mountains.
